Beach day tour highlights
Choose your coast
Tangalle is the most achievable day trip. Mirissa is best as an overnight stay for whale watching. Tap the cards to build your route.
Mirissa
Whale watching and beach
Best as overnight — whale watching boats leave 6:30–7:00am requiring very early BIA-area arrival. Same-day possible but long.
Galle Fort
UNESCO colonial heritage
Possible with 5:30am departure from Ella. Long day.
Unawatuna Beach
Easy beach stop near Galle
Best as add-on to Galle Fort — short hop from the fort.
Weligama
Beginner surf and stilt fishermen
November–April for calmer swells. Surf schools operate year-round.
Tangalle
Quieter south coast escape
Most achievable south coast day trip from Ella. 3–4 hrs drive.

Your vehicle
Private A/C car or van — essential for the 4-6 hour drive. No tuk tuk for this one: the distance and highway sections need a proper vehicle.
Tour pacing
Relaxed — but long. 12+ hours door-to-door. Most of the time is spent in the car. Great for slow beach days; tough if you dislike driving.
If you have 2+ days, staying overnight in Mirissa or Galle makes the whole trip easier.
A safe, patient driver for the long coastal run
Sanka knows the Ella-to-coast route by heart — the best places to stop, the quietest beaches, where to park near Galle Fort, the cleanest roadside rice-and-curry. He'll help you make the most of a long day and won't rush you. Honest pricing and a relaxed pace.
Where to stay on the coast
Sanka earns no commission — these are honest recommendations. Guests book directly.
Mirissa
Book beachfront for the best experience. Mirissa is small — most good places are within walking distance of the beach.
Mirissa Hills
Hillside property with ocean views, pool, and wonderful sunsets.
Palace Mirissa
Well-rated mid-range option, close to beach, good service.
Galle
Stay inside the fort if budget allows — waking up in a 400-year-old fortified city is one of Sri Lanka's best hotel experiences.
Amangalla
Sri Lanka's most celebrated heritage hotel — inside the fort, colonial grandeur, immaculate service.
Fort Bazaar
Beautiful boutique hotel inside the fort. Stylish rooms, excellent location.
Pedlar's Inn
Characterful guesthouse inside the fort. More affordable without sacrificing location.
Tangalle
Tangalle is quieter and more spread out than Mirissa. A car or tuk-tuk helps to get around between beaches and restaurants.
Amanwella
One of Sri Lanka's finest resorts. Private bay, exceptional service, pure indulgence.
Buckingham Place
Colonial-style boutique hotel with lagoon views. Peaceful and beautifully managed.
